October 19 , 2007 - The National Library of Medicine (NLM), NIH releases WISER for Smartphone
Today, NLM added Windows Mobile Smartphones to the platforms supported by its popular Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER). Developed by Next Century under contract to NLM, WISER is now supported on Windows Mobile devices, Palm OS PDAs, and Windows PCs, and can be downloaded for free from the WISER web site: http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov. In addition, WebWISER (http://webwiser.nlm.nih.gov) provides a web-enabled version supporting both PC- and PDA-based browsers.
August 27, 2007 – Next Century awarded contract with Radiance Technologies to support MASTIF ACTD
Next Century has been awarded a contract with Radiance Technologies of Huntsville, Alabama to support the DoD sponsored MASINT Tactical Information Fusion (MASTIF) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) program. The MASTIF ACTD is a program that will demonstrate the feasibility of using fused, MASINT, IMINT and SIGINT airborne sensors to support tactical military operations – providing the capabilities of sensor fusion to on-board operators in near real-time without the need for a trained specialist. Next Century’s role in the project is to provide System Engineering support to the government. Next Century will provide technical oversight of development and integration activities and support demonstration and testing efforts.
May 29, 2007 - The National Library of Medicine (NLM), NIH releases WISER 3.0
Today, NLM released Version 3.0 of its popular Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER). Developed by Next Century under contract to NLM, this latest version contains three major new capabilities including:
- Addition of radiological incident support. This includes the addition rich data for 21 radio isotopes and radiological event specific tools reference materials.
- Full inclusion of the Department of Transportation’s 2004 Emergency Response Guide (ERG). A powerful newly developed electronic version of the ERG is now available with WISER on the Windows and PocketPC platforms.
- Substance categorization support, both in the known substance list and for identifying unknown substances. This includes the hazard classification system (e.g. flammable liquids) and specific substance categorization (e.g. substances found in Methamphetamine labs).
WISER for PDAs and Windows PC platforms can be downloaded for free from the general WISER website (http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov). To access WebWISER, the Internet version of WISER, visit http://webwiser.nlm.nih.gov.

May 9, 2007 – Next Century Delivers Toxic Response Aid Prototype to Army Research Lab
Today, Next Century delivered a prototype of its Toxic Observation and Response Aid (TORA) to the Army Research Lab in White Sands, New Mexico. Developed under a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research contract, the PDA based proof-of-concept prototype integrates map-based plume prediction software with the National Library of Medicine’s WISER (http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov) hazmat tool, also developed by Next Century. WISER is a system designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents. WISER provides a wide range of information on hazardous substances, including substance identification support, human health information, and containment and suppression advice. TORA incorporates the power of WISER, but adds a geographic information system and toxic plume modeling software on a hand held PDA. With TORA, warfighters and first responders can identify the toxic substance they are dealing with and can see the geographic areas that will be impacted by the toxic cloud as it disperses.
If network connectivity is present, TORA provides automatic incident and weather updates, improved situational awareness, and more sophisticated plume predictions from server-based systems. “The key success factor of TORA is to provide DoD and civilian responders with immediate, at a glance life saving guidance when confronted with a toxic incident;” commented John McBeth, President and CEO of Next Century Corporation. “The prototype clearly shows that this goal is achievable on mobile devices.”
